Last night I landed in the glorious state of Texas and have to share my first few hours in the Lonestar State with y’all. (And I’m trying to do it in drawl)

- When the plane landed, the woman across from me on the plane began to receive calls on her cell phone almost instantly. Her ring tone? “Redneck Woman”… I cracked a huge grin, not gonna lie to ya. Also, everyone here calls their mom “Mother”. For example, here’s what my seat mate said to her mother, that she was travelling with: “Mother, we’s got to get back to Orrville before the mornin’ so we can be at the market”. Seriously, she’s pretty high up there on my list of fabulous Texans.
- When we got into the airport terminal, there was Mexican music playing and I thought the heaters had gone berserk because it was so hot in the terminal. Actually felt like landing in Mexico. Turns out it’s hot and humid here, they don’t air condition the terminal and 58.66% of the population of San Antonio is from Mexico- so it was a little similar.
- Wound up at the car rental agency where the woman renting us the car was telling us all about her drawers… Or her britches… Apparently that’s what true Texans call their pants, drawers. Britches is only for formal work pants. She was so excited that it was my first time to Texas that I got upgraded to a cruise control enabled car with GPS, despite my having called both the company and my company and asking for GPS but being turned down. Anyways, the GPS only works in Spanish and I have no clue where the button is to change it to English. I drove my boss and I through random industrial parks with windows covered in bars at 1am while the GPS yelled at me to “dé vuelta a la izquierda”… (Turn left, I’ve now figured out. I’m practically Spanish)
- Went for dinner at Applebees (Hey, it was like 11:30pm) and was served by a super nice guy named Enrique. Ordered an appetizer-size cheeseburger slider plate… Supposed to have 3 tiny burgers and some fries. It was a huge plate with what I can only describe as burgers the size of Whoppers and I could only eat 1 burger. Boss ordered a dessert “shooter” which was supposed to come in a shot glass for a quick dessert… It came in a huge freaking glass the size of a drinking glass that he couldn’t even finish. Everything is bigger in Texas, right? Enrique suggested that we find some country fried steak while we’re here, which is apparently code for deep-fried steak served on a bed of mashed potatoes with gravy on top. Love Enrique.
- It is a cold day here today at only 71 degrees Farenheit (22 celcius) but there is… Wait for it… 90% humidity. My hair isn’t sure what to do.. Laugh? Cry? In any case, it’s having a wonderful time causing a scene on my head. Have gone through my anti-frizz supply for the week on the first morning. This weekend is forecasting 94F (34 C) in Austin. Have been told this is cool weather and that it’s been a dry season. Not sure that my hair can handle any more drama and really glad I didn’t try to stuff my blowdryer and flat iron into my stuffed carryon suitcase because they’d be useless. That’s right, you heard me correctly. CARRY-ON suitcase for an 8 day trip. Who’s the packing queen? I’m the packing queen.
- Am in San Antonio today/tomorrow and Friday morning. Have meeting in extremely rural Texas on Friday afternoon- which I’m thinking will be a little like driving into a Western saloon town based on the company’s website pictures. Am extremely excited and extremely scared all at the same time. Have my list of the best places in San Antonio to get tacos and am looking forward to venturing out to find them with my GPS I brought from home that speaks to me in a language I can understand.
All in all… I haven’t been here long enough yet to form an educated decision about my feelings towards the state of Texas- but let’s just say we’re in serious “like” phase right now. You know what I mean? When there’s the boy you like in class but you don’t want to tell him just yet? That’s me… Texas and I are just getting started and I’m not ready to say where the relationship is going.
