Loving This Dress

il_430xN.32357880By force of habit, I like to have a new dress to wear every Christmas season. Generally this is for the annual family pictures, and I like to look good in those pictures since they’ll be hanging around for people to look at for years to come. Even though this year I’m trying to cut back on costs, I can still look around, can’t I? I decided that a frugal way to look into dresses would be via Etsy, and it’s a great way to get in with some new up and coming designers as well, which is how I came across this gorgeous purple dress, the Madeline Silk Marocain Dress.

What is truly amazing about this is that the dress was inspired by Madeline Spohr, a little girl who passed away in April, and whose mom’s blog I started to read following her passing. I have spoken about it before on here, with the Beauty Auctions I’ve won in support of the charity, but this was a totally random fluke find. Without realizing it, I had stumbled onto a listing where 50% of the proceeds would go to Friends of Maddie, a charity in her honor. It’s a tragic and sad story, but the charity work that’s being done in her honor is truly amazing. It’s a great cause if you can help out.

And in return- you get this gorgeous dress! It definitely reminds me of a dress Betty Draper would wear, and when jazzed up with a cardigan or maybe stole (?) it would be a truly remarkable dress to have in your repertoire.

Here’s the designer‘s take on the dress: “When I first had the idea for this dress, I wasn’t sure if it was a cocktail dress, a formal dress or just a ‘have to dress up’ dress. I still haven’t figured it out, but one thing I do know is that this sleek, simple gown embodies elegance and luxury. Silk marocain is a fabric that isn’t used too often outside of couture work because it’s a heavier, thicker silk in the same weave family as crepe but with a smoother finish. It is matte, but being silk, it has a beautiful sheen all of it’s own that accentuates the grape, antique violet soft purple color. The dress has cutaway shoulders that lead to a softly ruched and gathered collar. This is flattering for larger and smaller than average busts alike. The dress is cut wide with plenty of fabric and is meant to be belted as pictured – you can fasten the matching sash belt as tightly (or not) as you’d like, or even pull a little fabric out loosely above the belt to create a blouson effect which would shorted the hemline. The collar fastens in back with buttons and fabric loops.”
