Every Park Avenue Princess (I’ve been asked to stop referring to ourselves as PAPs, apparently that gives some readers flashbacks of Doctor’s Offices) now has got a Little Black Dress and a Pair of Pearl Earrings. We’ve almost got one outfit- save for the ever crucial ballet flat. While I’ve historically been more along the lines of the high-heeled Princess, I’ve recently fallen deeply deeply in love with ballet flats because of their comfort- while still being chic.

Since the Patron Saint of Park Avenue Princesses, Miss Audrey Hepburn herself, was the founder of the ballet flat movement having worn a pair along with some skinny jeans back in Funny Face in the Fifties, they’ve really come to their own over the last few years as a modern and classy footwear that can go literally from the subway to the boardroom if done correctly.
But what makes a good ballet flat?
Well, in my opinion the best ones are the ones that stick closest to tradition- and that means as close to flat as possible. There’s literally no point in having an extra half inch added to your frame here, that’s not the point of these shoes. You also want a toe that allows some of your toe cleavage to show, but with a modest coverage. Think if your toes were your chest and your ballets flats the dress you’d be wearing to visit your boyfriend’s parents for the first time. Make it classy but not prudish. Another good tip I was given was to be careful with the shape of the toe… Too round is apparently a sign of a cheap shoe.. And a true PA Princess doesn’t do anything on the cheap (or at least not having it look that way!)
So you have some dough? Check out these two ultimate ballet flats.
- Chanel Ballet Flat- the epitome of a stylish ballet flat… And also one of the best ways to say “Look at me, I spent a fortune on these shoes” Make sure you don’t do fakes- those never look good on anyone. I’ve seen them before at Neiman Marcus- who has a great selection of other ballet flats too.
- Salvatore Ferragamo Ballet Flat- I LOVE my Ferragamo, and his ballet flats are no exception. Perfection!

I would give anything for a pair of Chanel Ballerina Flats. I absolutely adore the two-tone ones – they’re so classy and chic!
