As I’ve said several hundred times, I really want a pair of Hunters. In fact, it’s turned into a need- the rain is wreaking havoc on my pants and heels- and what’s more expensive, a pair of rainboots or a whole new pant and boot wardrobe? Yup, I thought so too. I decided to present the case to Mr. Roccapuccia, but wanted to check out the size I needed so I could hop directly from a ” I agree, they’re a necessity” to Hunters.com before he could change his mind. I’m smart like that.
Today I hopped over at lunch just to see if there were any in stock at a store nearby and was disappointed that there were none in the color I wanted and none in my exact size- but there was an ugly colored pair in one size too big that I decided to try on, since I could then know that they would be just slightly too big and move on with my life. The salesguy wasn’t entirely too eager to go get the pair of boots out that I called “Ugly as hell”, but he obligingly went into the stock room and got them out.
I was wearing a dress and tights today, so there were no pants hampering my boots and I was silently thinking how completely genius I was as I took the boots out of the paper. Salesguy was eyeing me with a seething look as I got the boot over my toes, ankle… and it hit my calf. And got stuck. Now, I have very muscular calves. Not because I’ve used them anytime recently, but because I walked on my tip toes until about a year ago whenever I had shoes off. It means that I have bigger than normal calves to my leg shape. I should probably show you a little more detail so you don’t think I’m a calf freak. You’ll just see me as a freak who tries to scare week old kittens out of bushes in rural France. (It was as good of a picture as I could find of my calves while looking for a picture featuring me actually showing them, which is rare, so sue me.)
Anyways… I can’t get the boots over my calf. Salesguy perks up with the fact that I can’t get them over my calves and his eye twinkles as he says “Um… Could you lose weight in the calf to work with those boots maybe next season? We could pre-order some for next fall…” SERIOUSLY! My calves are the only muscular part of me, and although I don’t love them (They make boot shopping very tough and can get painful because I don’t stretch enough) I also don’t hate them, nor do I think that I can lose weight in the calf. Oooh, can I take muscle out of the calf and implant it somewhere else?
The answer is yes. It’s called calf reduction surgery. It’s big in Korea and other parts of Asia. It has side effects like not walking again and painful nerve damage, so that is out.
Long story short, the classic Hunters don’t fit over my gigantosaurus rex calves and they seemingly never will. Did I just try on a narrow pair? Are they all like this? I’ve been Googling and I keep reading reviews that they fit really slim in the calf. Can you expand them? I was just trying to maintain any dignity I had in leaving the store without spurting out hatred so I didn’t get a chance to play around with the buckles on the sides.
I’ve been googling for hours and have now come up with the general consensus that the Hunter Huntress is made for wide calves. Is this right?

Ugh! I have the same problem with my calves. It’s a pain when trying to find boots ;-P
Don’t feel Bad Ms A, I can’t wear any type of high boots…
Mine are SUPER tight in the calves. It makes them hard to get on and off for sure. The buckles don’t do anything at all.
The Huntress version is cool, I have never heard of them!
nice post. thanks.
Hi – very good web site you have established. I enjoyed reading this posting. I did want to issue a comment to tell you that the design of this site is very aesthetically pleasing. I used to be a graphic designer, now I am a copy editor in chief for a marketing firm. I have always enjoyed playing with information processing systems and am attempting to learn code in my spare time (which there is never enough of lol).
