NBC’s Fashion Star: Project Runway Rip-Off

by Miss A on January 26, 2012

I kinda feel bad for NBC. They used to be the biggest network on TV with Seinfeld and Friends, and now even their most hyped and critically/Miss A-loved shows like 30 Rock and Parks and Rec are losing to their rivals in the same time zone (such as other Miss A favorite The Big Bang Theory). It’s just not a fun time to be a TV executive at NBC I think.

That being said, have you seen some of the crap they’ve decided to air lately? I mean seriously, some of these TV shows make me scrunch up my face (which I try to avoid- wrinkles) and question the intelligence of the person who thought it would be a good idea to air such gems as “The Playboy Club”. Why don’t they just get a group of people in the age brackets that they’re targeting- like my very coveted adults 18-35- and ask us if we’d watch the show before spending all kinds of money airing it and in publicity? There are just some things I don’t understand.

What I also don’t understand is how the good people at NBC are now airing a show called “Fashion Star“… Which looks to be a complete and blatant rip off of Project Runway. They have fashion designers that they’ve plucked from what I’m sure they deem to be obscurity and then they provide them with fashion mentors (who in this case are the questionable Jessica Simpson and Nicole Richie… Seriously?) and pit them against each other in contests to see who’s the best designer. Do you see a difference? I don’t.

And now let’s talk about the judges. Jessica Simpson? Sure, she’s behind a billion dollar retail business (still blows my mind, but all the power to her) but is she really qualified to judge fashion? She has stylists who dress her and even then she’s questionable, at best, with those outfits. Nicole Richie? I suppose I can see where this is coming from- she does have the House of Harlow line of jewlery- but again, she’s known for having been famously styled by Rachel Zoe and not actually doing anything herself!

Think this might be next in line for the NBC axe (but then again, it’s reality TV and those beasts have minds of their own- who’d have thought something like 8 singing shows would all be able to exist?)
